Finding Our Power Together (FOPT) is an Indigenous-led service organization working to end preventable suicide and support the wellness and thriving of Indigenous communities across Turtle Island.
We offer healing programs, custom services, and community-led research that reflect the strengths of our people and our right to be well. Our work is guided by Indigenous values, built in collaboration with youth and community members, and led by a diverse team of facilitators, clinicians, Knowledge Keepers, and researchers.
Our mission is to end preventable death by suicide in Indigenous communities and support our people to not only survive, but thrive. We do this by offering culturally grounded programs and services that respond to immediate needs, building capacity through mentorship and training, and leading community-based research and advocacy to address the deeper systemic causes of harm. Our work is grounded in a braided approach that brings together Indigenous knowledge, evidence-based strategies, and relational care, supporting individuals and communities to reclaim their power and use it to help others.
We envision a future where Indigenous people are deeply connected to their culture, supported by strong communities, and living full lives with purpose, belonging, and joy.
We imagine a world where no one is lost to preventable death by suicide, because every child, youth, adult, and family has access to the relationships, knowledge, and care they need to thrive and the systemic causes that make life unliveable have been addressed.
Finding Our Power Together began in 2016 through a community-based research partnership with Nibinamik First Nation, a remote Treaty 9 community. In speaking about community wellness, youth shared that in their community, the clearest sign of wellness was when young people were not dying by suicide.
Together, community members and a team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth from Toronto Metropolitan University created a documentary to talk openly about suicide in First Nations communities and to offer support and connection to other Indigenous youth nation-wide. The name Finding Our Power Together came from that collaboration, reflecting the power that comes from connection across communities, where we share our stories and gifts for the benefit of all.
In 2020, Finding Our Power Together became a registered nonprofit. Today, we continue to offer programs, services, and research that are rooted in culture, led by community, and focused on wellness and connection
